16-year-old arrested; planned capturing with explosives at Berkeley High, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to take part in a mass faculty taking pictures that might have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive School, police say. 

The teen was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division stated in a press release. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no school that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing destructive system supplies and threatening to commit a crime which will result in demise or great bodily damage.

Police stated they received a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a taking pictures that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teen was a scholar at Berkeley High College.

Upon executing the search warrant, police stated they discovered components to explosives and assault rifles, a number of knives, and digital objects that could possibly be used to create further weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"College security stays a high priority for the division," police stated in an announcement. 

Details on whom the teen was attempting to recruit weren't disclosed. Police mentioned this case stays beneath investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens advised the school's community that the district was in shut contact with police throughout this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teenager's weapon parts, the district relied on police expertise to evaluate any potential ongoing danger to its colleges. The district communicated with police on the student's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions during this era, we alerted our administrative and safety workers about this investigation and, as is our standard follow, maintained close contact with our BPD Faculty Resource Officer on the Berkeley Excessive Faculty campus," Stephens wrote. "All through the investigation interval, we had been assured that this particular person did not pose a direct risk to the Berkeley Excessive School community."

The district is conducting their very own investigation on this matter. 

The district might pursue disciplinary action in opposition to the student.
