16-year-old arrested; planned shooting with explosives at Berkeley Excessive, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to take part in a mass college shooting that could have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive School, police say. 

The teenager was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division stated in a press release. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no school that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing damaging machine supplies and threatening to commit a crime which will result in dying or nice bodily injury.

Police mentioned they received a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a shooting that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teen was a scholar at Berkeley Excessive School.

Upon executing the search warrant, police mentioned they discovered parts to explosives and assault rifles, a number of knives, and electronic gadgets that could possibly be used to create additional weapons. 

At that time, a warrant was obtained for the teenager's arrest.

"School safety remains a high precedence for the department," police mentioned in an announcement. 

Details on whom the teenager was making an attempt to recruit weren't disclosed. Police mentioned this case remains below investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens told the varsity's community that the district was in close contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon parts, the district relied on police experience to assess any potential ongoing threat to its faculties. The district communicated with police on the student's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions throughout this period, we alerted our administrative and safety workers about this investigation and, as is our commonplace practice, maintained shut contact with our BPD College Useful resource Officer on the Berkeley Excessive College campus," Stephens wrote. "All through the investigation period, we had been assured that this individual did not pose an immediate menace to the Berkeley High College community."

The district is conducting their very own investigation on this matter. 

The district could pursue disciplinary action towards the coed. 

In addition, a city hall meeting titled: 'How one can Talk to Children About College Violence' provided by Alameda County Workplace of Schooling is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
