16-year-old arrested; deliberate shooting with explosives at Berkeley High, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to take part in a mass college taking pictures that could have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive School, police say. 

The teen was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division mentioned in a press release. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no school that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing harmful machine supplies and threatening to commit against the law which can result in dying or great bodily injury.

Police stated they received a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a taking pictures that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teenager was a student at Berkeley High School.

Upon executing the search warrant, police mentioned they discovered elements to explosives and assault rifles, several knives, and digital objects that could possibly be used to create extra weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"College safety remains a excessive priority for the department," police stated in a press release. 

Details on whom the teen was attempting to recruit weren't disclosed. Police stated this case stays beneath investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens informed the college's group that the district was in close contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon parts, the district relied on police expertise to assess any potential ongoing risk to its faculties. The district communicated with police on the student's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions throughout this era, we alerted our administrative and security employees about this investigation and, as is our commonplace practice, maintained shut contact with our BPD School Resource Officer on the Berkeley Excessive School campus," Stephens wrote. "Throughout the investigation interval, we were assured that this particular person didn't pose an immediate menace to the Berkeley Excessive College neighborhood."

The district is conducting their very own investigation on this matter. 

The district might pursue disciplinary action in opposition to the student.
