The policy, disclosed in leaked emails Musk sent to Tesla's govt workers Tuesday, was first reported by electrical vehicle information website Electrek.

"Anyone who wishes to do remote work should be in the workplace for a minimum (and I imply *minimum*) of 40 hours per week or depart Tesla. That is less than we ask of factory staff," Musk wrote, adding that the workplace have to be the employee's major workplace where the other staff they regularly work together with are based mostly — "not a distant branch office unrelated to the job duties."

Musk mentioned he would personally review any request for exemption from the coverage, however that for probably the most part, "Should you don't present up, we will assume you will have resigned."

Tesla (TSLA) didn't reply to a request for touch upon the coverage change, but Musk appeared to verify it in a tweet of his personal early Wednesday when requested on Twitter, "Hey Elon...any further comment to people who suppose coming into work is an antiquated idea?" Musk replied: "They need to fake to work elsewhere."The coverage is totally at odds with that of the opposite tech firm Musk is trying to buy, Twitter (TWTR), which has previously announced workers can continue to work from home "without end" if they prefer. "Wherever you're feeling most productive and artistic is where you'll work and that features working from residence full-time forever," CEO Parag Agrawal wrote in a note to Twitter's nearly 100,000 staff in March, simply before Musk's interest in owning the social media platform was disclosed. At Tesla, however, that will not be the case. It's particularly essential that senior managers be seen in the office, Musk stated, adding that was one of many reasons he primarily lived at the Tesla manufacturing unit in Fremont, California, when the company was struggling to increase production in 2017 and 2018.

"If I had not finished that, Tesla would long ago have gone bankrupt," he wrote. "There are of course firms that do not require this, however when was the final time they shipped an ideal new product? It's been some time."

He added, "Tesla has and will create and actually manufacture probably the most thrilling and meaningful merchandise of any company on Earth," he added. "This will not happen by phoning it in."

Surveys show nearly all of office employees want the choice to do business from home. Since reopening places of work following Covid-19 shutdowns, many firms past Twitter have introduced elevated flexibility for employees who want to work remotely, partly as a way to retain or appeal to talent in a very tight labor market. But the world's richest individual doesn't seem involved about that dynamic.
