Apple has discontinued the iPod, 20 years after it was launched.

The US tech large mentioned its iconic music player has been replaced by different gadgets, making the iPod redundant.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide marketing, mentioned: "Immediately, the spirit of iPod lives on.

"We've integrated an incredible music experience across all of our merchandise, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and throughout Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

"And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound high quality with support for spatial audio - there isn't any higher way to take pleasure in, discover, and expertise music."

In October 2001, Steve Jobs debuted the unique iPod and it was the first MP3 player that would maintain 1,000 songs and had a 10-hour battery life.

"With iPod, Apple has invented an entire new class of digital music player that allows you to put your total music collection in your pocket and hearken to it wherever you go," he stated on the time.

"With iPod, listening to music will never be the same again."

Comparable MP3 gamers launched by Microsoft and Sony did not have the same success as the iPod.

Apple has released five variations of its music participant - the Basic, Touch, Shuffle, Mini and Nano.

The corporate has been slowly killing its iPod vary in recent years, with cell phone know-how enabling prospects to take heed to music providers on their phones.

In 2014, the traditional click on wheel model was discontinued, and the Shuffle and Nano were killed off three years later.

The seventh-generation iPod contact was the one model nonetheless on sale right now.
