16-year-old arrested; deliberate shooting with explosives at Berkeley High, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to participate in a mass school capturing that would have included a bombing at Berkeley High School, police say. 

The teen was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division mentioned in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no faculty that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing harmful gadget supplies and threatening to commit a criminal offense which can end in dying or nice bodily harm.

Police mentioned they received a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a capturing that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teen was a pupil at Berkeley Excessive College.

Upon executing the search warrant, police said they discovered elements to explosives and assault rifles, a number of knives, and digital gadgets that could possibly be used to create additional weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"School safety remains a excessive priority for the division," police said in a statement. 

Particulars on whom the teen was trying to recruit were not disclosed. Police mentioned this case stays under investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens told the college's group that the district was in shut contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teenager's weapon components, the district relied on police experience to evaluate any potential ongoing danger to its colleges. The district communicated with police on the student's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions during this period, we alerted our administrative and security employees about this investigation and, as is our standard observe, maintained shut contact with our BPD College Resource Officer on the Berkeley High Faculty campus," Stephens wrote. "Throughout the investigation interval, we had been assured that this particular person didn't pose an immediate risk to the Berkeley Excessive College community."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district may pursue disciplinary action against the student.
