16-year-old arrested; planned shooting with explosives at Berkeley Excessive, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to participate in a mass faculty capturing that would have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive School, police say. 

The teenager was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division said in a press release. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no faculty that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing destructive machine materials and threatening to commit a criminal offense which will lead to loss of life or nice bodily injury.

Police mentioned they acquired a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a taking pictures that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police did not say if the teen was a student at Berkeley High Faculty.

Upon executing the search warrant, police mentioned they found elements to explosives and assault rifles, a number of knives, and digital items that could be used to create extra weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"Faculty security stays a excessive precedence for the department," police stated in a press release. 

Details on whom the teenager was trying to recruit weren't disclosed. Police said this case remains below investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens instructed the college's community that the district was in close contact with police throughout this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon elements, the district relied on police expertise to assess any potential ongoing danger to its faculties. The district communicated with police on the student's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions throughout this era, we alerted our administrative and safety staff about this investigation and, as is our normal practice, maintained close contact with our BPD School Resource Officer on the Berkeley Excessive College campus," Stephens wrote. "All through the investigation interval, we were assured that this individual didn't pose a direct menace to the Berkeley Excessive College community."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district might pursue disciplinary motion towards the scholar. 

In addition, a town hall assembly titled: 'Methods to Speak to Youngsters About College Violence' offered by Alameda County Office of Education is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
